What are the Works of Mercy?

The Corporal Works of Mercy are based on Matthew 25: 35-36, sometimes known as the "Judgement of the Nations". These are oriented toward the physical needs of our neighbor:

Feed the hungry
Give drink to the thirsty
Clothe the naked
Shelter the homeless
Visit the sick
Visit those in prison
Bury the dead

The Spiritual Works of Mercy are based on the teachings of Christ, found in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 6-7) and other places in the scripture. They are oriented toward the spiritual needs of our neighbor:

Admonish the sinner
Instruct the ignorant
Counsel the doubtful
Comfort the sorrowing
Bear wrongs patiently
Forgive all injuries
Pray for the living and the dead
