Catechetical Sunday 2008

Thus, the word of God, contained and transmitted in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition and interpreted by the Magisterium, is the principal source of catechesis. (National Directory for Catechesis, #18)

Catechetical Sunday 2008 will be celebrated nation-wide on September 21, 2008. The theme of this year's Catechetical Sunday is "The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church." This is also the theme for our Catechetical Convocation on Saturday, September 27, 2008. The theme is explained by Archbishop Wuerl, Chair of the Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis:

The Word of God is the inexhaustible source of life for the Church. From the earliest days of the Church, the Holy Spirit has strengthened men and women to share in the mission of spreading the Gospel. Catechists, under the guidance of their pastors, help to initiate and advance the encounter with Christ, the Word made flesh, so that the believer may be brought to a deeper communion with him in the life of his Body, the Church. Catechetical Sunday is a time to celebrate the work of the catechist and renew our gratitude for these faithful men and women who persevere in the labor of passing on the faith.

This same theme, The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church, will be used by the Twelfth Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops which will meet in Rome, October 5-26, 2008 at the request of Pope Benedict XVI.
