portuncula

August 2, 2010 is the feast of the Portuncula a major feast for the Franciscans. Portuncula means small portion and refers to the land on which sat a chapel called St. Mary of the Angels. This is the third church St. Francis rebuilt in Italy. It is here where God first sent Francis’ brothers and where the Franciscan Order began.

God has brought us together to live the gospel message and to bring it to all the people.

One of our challenges today is to take the time in exploring the possibility of rebuilding / repairing our Parish Religious Education programs. Both terms imply ongoing work on structures that already have foundations and have been in place for some time. It doesn't imply beginning from scratch or building something completely different, completely new. It should be in ways that will be meaningful in addressing the needs of our families in this day and age while at the same time challenging them in their commitment to the Lord during this coming year.

What do you think?

Involvement
Families today need a deeper sense of belonging. We know, children flourish in their faith when they feel grounded in a place of worship and among people they know. Parish life must be more than Mass on Sunday and having our children attend classes in the Religious Education Program in order to receive their sacraments. Our belonging brings a sense of ownership. What can the program / parish do for my children? What can I do for the program / parish?

Families
I think that families need help in being shored up. Whatever a parish can do to help families is a good thing. That's why Family Catechesis is not optional, but essential to our parish religious education programs.
