Can a Catholic become a Mason?
A Catholic cannot become a Mason.
The source of some confusion regarding this question involves the revised Code of Canon Law (1983). The former Code of Canon Law (1917) mentioned the Masons by name; the new Code does not (see c. 1374). However, the Declaration on Masonic Associations, issued by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith stated that
the Church’s negative judgment in regard to Masonic association remains unchanged since their principles have always been considered irreconcilable with the doctrine of the Church and therefore membership in them remains forbidden. The faithful who enroll in Masonic associations are in a state of grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion. (Declaration on Masonic Associations, November 26, 1983)
