Parish-Based Programs for All Ages and Needs
Many parishes offer religious education for pre-kindergarten children. Special preference is given to "The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd," a Montessori-based program to nurture and develop the faith life of three to five year-old children. Other parishes offer a variety of pre-kindergarten religious education programs.
Grades K through 6
All parishes offer a developmental religious education program for children from kindergarten through grade 6. The children are taught in an age-appropriate manner about Jesus Christ, His life and teaching, and His church; about the sacraments, the moral life and the Bible. They are prepared to receive the Sacraments of Penance, Eucharist and Confirmation.
Grades 7 and 8
The study of the faith continues for young adolescents in grades 7 and 8. Many parishes offer the Sacrament of Confirmation at this time. Students examine their own growth and development in the context of a maturing faith life. They continue with a deeper study of Jesus and the Gospel message, morality, church history and prayer.
Persons with Special Needs
The Catechetical Office assists parish religious education programs in developing a component for children and youth with special needs, as well as providing spiritual support for their families. We also provide a program to train catechists in teaching persons with disabilities.
