Parish-Based Programs for All Ages and Needs
Many parishes offer religious education for pre-kindergarten children. Special preference is given to "The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd," a Montessori-based program to nurture and develop the faith life of three to five year-old children. Other parishes offer a variety of pre-kindergarten religious education programs.
Grades K through 6
All parishes offer a developmental religious education program for children from kindergarten through grade 6. The children are taught in an age-appropriate manner about Jesus Christ, His life and teaching, and His church; about the sacraments, the moral life and the Bible. They are prepared to receive the Sacraments of Penance, Eucharist and Confirmation.
Grades 7 and 8
The study of the faith continues for young adolescents in grades 7 and 8. Many parishes offer the Sacrament of Confirmation at this time. Students examine their own growth and development in the context of a maturing faith life. They continue with a deeper study of Jesus and the Gospel message, morality, church history and prayer.
Adults of All Ages
Parishes offer continuing religious education to adults of all ages and at various stages of faith development. Topics include the sacraments, spirituality, morality, scripture study, the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the history of the Second Vatican Council. Special programs usually are offered during Lent and Advent.
Persons of All Ages with Special Needs
The Catechetical Office assists parish religious education programs in developing a component for children, youth and adults with special needs, as well as providing spiritual support for their families. We also provide a program to train catechists in teaching persons with disabilities.
